About us

Laura - Holistic Design

Laura Catanzaro is an architectural designer who looks at the connection between the design of our environments, our energy consumption, and our health. She is interested not just in new construction, but also in what happens to the condition of our homes and workplaces over time, and the impact this can have on the well-being of those who live and work in these spaces. Laura hopes to provide homeowners and businesses with a practical means to improve the health, comfort, and energy efficiencies of their spaces, while reducing their environmental “footprint”.  For Liane’s Deep Energy Retrofit, Laura is following the system researched and advanced by the Building Science Corporation in Somerville, specifically by Betsy Pettit—the “energy diva” of residential building science. Laura looks at the “what”, the “how” and the “why” of architecture, and is particularly interested in the “how”–especially for retrofits. The “how” is changing in this era of global warming. Our building codes, the way we build, and even our reasons for retrofitting are “stretching” to address climate change.

Liane - Home Owner

Liane Curtis, the owner of 23-25 Ellington Road (the DER) is a musicologist and music critic.  You can learn more about her work here  http://www.brandeis.edu/centers/wsrc/scholars/profiles/Curtis.html/ She is active with several non-profits, including the Boston Women’s Heritage Trail (www.bwht.org),

She has a concern  for the environment, and has been committed to a green lifestyle in ways such as recycling, reusing, re-purposing, and avoiding the waste of consumerism.  She is excited that Laura has convinced her to make this major (and innovative) step in environmental reform and activism.

Please let me know how I may be able to get some information or plans for the greenhouse made out of windows on your website. You had mentioned that Liane Curtis may make a “future greenhouse”. Thank you for any info.
